Neat-O, Senate Democrats Damn Near Have Their 60 – UPDATE

Posted by TheJOTUS on February 2, 2009

It looks like Obama is going to name Republican Senator Judd Gregg commerce secretary.  This means the democratic Governor of New Hampshire will fill his seat.  Throw in comedic hack Al Franken and well……we got problems.  Filibuster proof problems.

Of course Gregg says he won’t accept unless he is assured his seat stays in GOP hands:

“Gregg would never allow his seat to go to a Democrat, the only way he would allow it is if he died,” said a Republican close to Gregg. “He would consider it to be a breach of trust to people who elected it.”

“He will not take Commerce secretary unless Lynch says he will appoint a Republican,” said the Republican close to Gregg.

Yeah, right.  And if you pull my other leg it will play jingle bells.  But hey, maybe I am just a cynic.  I mean this guy says the Governor will appoint a Republican if Obama nominates Gregg.  Here is the Governor’s statement:

“We are in the midst of a national economic crisis, and it calls for cooperation on all of our parts. We all need to work together to do what is in the best interest of our country and our state.  “I have had conversations with Senator Gregg, the White House and U.S. Senate leadership. Senator Gregg has said he would not resign his seat in the U.S. Senate if it changed the balance in the Senate. Based on my discussions, it is clear the White House and Senate leadership understand this as well.

“It is important that President Obama be able to select the advisors he feels are necessary to help him address the challenges facing our nation.

“If President Obama does nominate Senator Gregg to serve as Commerce Secretary, I will name a replacement who will put the people of New Hampshire first and represent New Hampshire effectively in the U.S. Senate.”

Ooooo, that was warm and fuzzy.  Did you see a promise or vote of confidence in there?  Me neither.  In other words:  the check is in the mail, it’s just a cold sore, I won’t go in your mouth, of course I will pull out, you know I love you, I will always respect you, yada…yada…yada…yada…yada.

On my super awesome satellite talk radio, the hububaloo is that we shouldn’t be giving the Senator such a hard time.  That it would be hard to say no, for partisan reasons, to the President when asked to serve.  This is hogwash.  Gobbletygook.  Boloney.  Why shouldn’t he turn it down for partisan reasons when he is being nominated for partisan reasons?  His service is to the people that elected him, not to the President.

UPDATE

Looks like Gregg is going to take the Commerce position after all.  Sell out.  But, it appears Gregg’s demand of the Governor appointing a Republican to fill his seat will be fulfilled.  And that person?  Bonnie Newman.  Just doing a quick Google search, you find this little nugget of potpourri:

Newman served as assistant secretary of Commerce for economic development in the Reagan administration. She was in charge of administrative operations for the George H.W. Bush White House.

She was chief of staff to Gregg when he was a congressman in the 1980s, and she was one of the first Republicans to publicly endorse Lynch in his 2004 challenge of then-Republican Governor Craig Benson, and co-chaired Republicans for Lynch.

Did I mention this was neat-o?  By the way, emphasis is by me.

So in the end Gregg will get his Republican appointment……in name only.

I hope they just screw the whole thing up. How about a 70 person majority. There would still be stories about bipartisan and republicans holding things up.
